replace brackets between references with a semi-colon

When writing a list of references at the end of a sentence, you want them to appear like this: (Stilwell et al., 2007; Edwards & Hammersmith., 1958; Patel., 1999), with a semicolon between references, rather than like this: (Stilwell et al., 2007)(Edwards & Hammersmith., 1958)(Patel., 1999), with brackets between references
But I can't find a way to do it automatically.  I have resigned to converting to static text and editing out the brackets.  What a bummer.  Any help anyone?
